The Drag Specialties OldBook ™ cover bike is a true enthusiast bike build. No big shop, no big group of mechanics. Just one man, Dan Rognsvoog (also known as Cabana Dan’s Customs) built the machine featured on the cover. The 1956 Panhead custom started out with a genuine H-D Panhead engine and transmission Dan had sitting in his well-organized, well-equipped garage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dan has a full-time job working for the power company. Building amazing custom motorcycles is his hobby, his passion. He has completed multiple custom bike builds over the years, all just for the sake of building something cool and taking it to a show. His bikes have been shown around the country at events and garnered a lot of positive feedback. So, how did a guy who just builds bikes for fun, in his spare time, wind up getting the call to create a catalog cover bike for Drag Specialties? Completely by chance. “I went along with a friend to Janesville, Wisconsin to look at a car that was for sale,” Dan says. “The car was at a Drag Specialties employee’s house.” Drag Specialties’ Tom Motzko just happened to be there when Dan and his friend arrived to look at the car. Of course, Dan and Tom talked bikes. “I mentioned that I built bikes as a hobby,” Dan says. He sent a few photos after the meeting to Tom, but didn’t really think it would lead anywhere. Tom and Dan met up again in Sturgis for breakfast. “Tom kind of apologized,” Dan says. Tom had looked at the photos Dan sent a little closer, and been very impressed. “I didn’t realize you made so many cool bikes!” Tom told me. The two talked a bit more, and Tom referenced a vintage supercharged Harley he’d recently seen at the Hand Built show in Austin, Texas. “That was my favorite bike in the show,” Tom said. “I told Tom that was one of my recent builds,” Dan says with a laugh. That is when the deal to have Dan create a cover bike was put in place. Drag Specialties catalogs were sent to Dan’s house and the project began. Dan says it was a very smooth build.
